MORE ABOUT DANA POINT, CA

Dana Point (/ˌdeɪnə-/) is a city in southern Orange County, California, with a population of 33,107 as of the 2020 census. It features one of the few harbors along the Orange County coast and is a popular surfing destination, accessible via State Route 1. Named after the headland of Dana Point, the city honors Richard Henry Dana Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast, who described it as “the only romantic spot on the coast.” This area is recognized as California Historical Landmark #189.

The Acjachemen village of Toovannga, near today’s Dana Point Harbor, was situated at the mouth of San Juan Creek, with villages of around 250 people thriving through land stewardship and independent governance, forming alliances through marriage. European settlement began with the Portolá expedition (1769-1770), leading to the Mission San Juan Capistrano’s exploitation of local indigenous people. By 1778, tribal leader Cinquanto’s revolt was thwarted by the Spanish.

During the Mexican era, Dana Point was a key port in the hide trade with the Mission. Richard Henry Dana visited in 1835, and Argentine sailor Hippolyte de Bouchard raided the area in 1818.

In the American era, the Dana Point Syndicate, formed in 1926 by notable investors including Harry Chandler and General M. H. Sherman, developed 1,388 acres of land. Sidney H. Woodruff spearheaded the project, creating a community with tree-lined streets and modern amenities. Although the Dana Point Inn project was abandoned during the Great Depression, 34 original Woodruff homes remain in Lantern Village, named after colored lanterns once used by ships in the harbor.

DANA POINT LAND MARK

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Dana Point has a total area of 29.5 square miles (76 km2). 6.5 square miles (17 km2) of it is land and 23.0 square miles (60 km2) of it (77.96%) is water.

The Dana Point headlands are a prominent feature in Orange County geography and after years of controversy,[24] are currently being developed as a 118-house gated community, however 68 acres (280,000 m2) of the site is open to the public and features a nature center and walking trails exhibiting “lost” plants of the Southern California coast. Views on a clear day extend to Catalina Island and La Jolla in San Diego County.

The city is located 59 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and 65 miles northwest of San Diego.[25][26] Dana Point is bordered by San Clemente to the southeast, San Juan Capistrano to the northeast, Laguna Beach to the northwest, and Laguna Niguel to the north.
