MORE ABOUT NEWPORT BEACH, CA

Newport Beach is a coastal city of about 85,000 in southern Orange County, California, United States. Located about 40 miles (64 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, Newport Beach is known for its sandy beaches. The city’s harbor once supported maritime industries. Today it is used mostly for recreation. Balboa Island draws visitors with a waterfront path and easy access from the ferry to the shops and restaurants.

The Upper Bay of Newport was carved by a stream during the Pleistocene period, while the Lower Bay formed later from ocean currents depositing sand, creating the Balboa Peninsula. The area was home to the Tongva people for thousands of years, with villages like Genga and Moyongna. Europeans colonized the land in the 1800s, displacing the Tongva.

In the late 19th century, the State of California sold land in Newport for $1 per acre. Anglo-American settlement increased after the steamer Vaquero navigated the bay in 1870. James Irvine and associates named the area “Newport.” Development surged in 1905 with the Pacific Electric Railway’s southern terminus connecting Newport Beach to Los Angeles. The city was incorporated in 1906 with a population of 206. Subsequent expansions included annexing Corona del Mar in 1923, Newport Coast, East Santa Ana Heights, and San Joaquin Hills in 2002, and West Santa Ana Heights in 2008.

Newport Beach ranges in elevation from sea level to 1,161 feet at Signal Peak in the San Joaquin Hills, with an official elevation of 25 feet. It is bordered by Huntington Beach to the west, Costa Mesa, John Wayne Airport, the City of Irvine, and UC Irvine to the north, and Crystal Cove State Park to the east. The city covers 53.0 square miles, with 23.8 square miles of land and 29.2 square miles of water. Notable areas include Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, Balboa Peninsula, Lido Peninsula, Newport Coast, San Joaquin Hills, Santa Ana Heights, and West Newport.

NEWPORT BEACH LAND MARK

Built in 1905-1906, the Balboa Pavilion is Newport Beach’s oldest standing structure. Construction was challenging due to limited access, but workers rushed to complete it in time for the Pacific Electric Red Car Line’s arrival. The Pavilion opened on July 4, with nearly 1,000 visitors arriving by train from Los Angeles. Initially, it featured a large meeting room upstairs and a bathhouse downstairs. As it gained popularity, the Pavilion expanded to include various amenities such as a post office, barber shop, bowling alley, art museum, gambling parlor, dance hall, and restaurant. It also became a hub for speedboat rides, harbor excursions, sport fishing, and bathing beauty contests.
