MORE ABOUT LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA

Laguna Niguel, a city in Orange County, California, has a population of 64,355 as of the 2020 census. Named after the Spanish word for “lagoon” and a Native American village, it is located in the San Joaquin Hills near the Pacific Ocean. Established in 1959 on the Rancho Niguel land grant, it was one of California’s first master-planned communities. Predominantly residential, it serves as a bedroom community for northern and central Orange County. Laguna Niguel boasts a median household income significantly higher than the county and national averages, a mild coastal climate, low crime rate, and numerous parks and trails.

The first recorded inhabitants of Laguna Niguel were the Acjachemem Native Americans, who had a village called “Niguili” near Aliso Creek and Sulphur Creek. In the 1700s, Spanish missionaries established Mission San Juan Capistrano to convert the Acjachemem to Christianity. Following Mexican independence in 1821, the area became part of Rancho Niguel.

Juan Avila received the 13,316-acre Rancho Niguel in 1842, but lost it in 1865 due to drought. Lewis Moulton and Jean Pierre Daguerre acquired the land in 1895, using it for ranching until the mid-20th century. In 1954, the Daguerres sold most of their land to developers, including the Shumaker Group and George Capron.

In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation was formed to create a master-planned community on this land, designed by architect Victor Gruen. Emphasizing parks and open spaces, the plan led to the city’s development. Key infrastructure like Crown Valley Parkway and the Moulton Niguel Water District facilitated growth. By 1965, the population reached 1,000. Laguna Niguel Regional Park opened in 1973, and the Chet Holifield Federal Building, a local landmark, was built in 1971.
